Peter wanted to be his own interior designer.

He's made the effort to study every design magazine on what's in and what's out.

He's paid a contractor good money to duplicate all the designs he liked from the pages.

He's chosen the best color scheme in the world. Or so he thought.

He's splurged on the most expensive furniture imported from Europe for his 700 sq ft apartment.

But Peter still doesn't like his home in the end.

Anyone who has tried to play the role of interior designer himself or herself will admit to making a few 'mistakes' along the way. Expensive ones at that.

I can write a 100-page book on design mistakes to avoid, but I'd rather not because it'll bore you to tears. I can list out all the funny things people like Peter do to their homes, but I know there'll forever be people who act in the same way as he did.

1. Interior design is just like fashion design. You don't read Elle or Vogue, and attempt to combine a Versace blouse with a Galliano pants just because you like them - individually. No, it doesn't work that way.

Designing areas in the home without any thoughts on how they'll flow together is a road map to disaster.

2. Getting furniture and equipment without considering the size and proportion of the interior space is akin to buying a pair of shoes without knowing what the size of your feet is. I once had a client who's so excited about his new sofa buy he didn't realised there's only a 1 ½ ft width space left for circulation.

And he's a BIG man. Ouch.

3. Everyone has a thing or two about high art, just as they do high fashion. But take note high art doesn't mean art that's floating out in that void high over the sofa.

4. A brightly-lit space always looks appealing, and you may think a scrawny 100 sq ft room installed with 10 halogen recessed down lights on the ceiling looks hot. But each halogen bulb runs extremely hot too.

And mind you, a home is not a museum.

5. Distinguish between matchy and boring. When everything in the room matches, it becomes so safe it's boring. Please, the idea of buying a suite of furniture of the same design fizzled out ages ago.

Variety is the spice of life and interior design.

6. 4 clashing rainbow colors are fine on the walls of a kid's room. But why do I keep seeing the living area doubling as one?

Colours may be fun, but do use it wisely.

Still want to be your own interior designer? Good for you.
