Singapore designer Yao Chin Leng's flair for fusing East and West elements is evident in his body of work. His firm HybridMatter showed the Qi and Asia coffee tables during last year's Platform, a show held annually in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair Singapore and ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS/AFS), and wowed the crowd with its clean-cut designs.

Qi's form is clearly inspired by the Chinese chess pieces of weiqi. Asia is a collection of coffee and side tables that re-interprets the Oriental traditions using contemporary materials in sophisticated new ways. But my vote still goes for Dusk, a dark-stained Oak table which evolved from the image of a setting sun. Eclipse, on the other hand, was conceptualized from the phenomenon which we call the lunar eclipse.

At this year's Platform, HybridMatter will be showing a collection of new furniture for living, dining and bedroom spaces. We'll be keeping tab.

Dusk is indeed a fine table.
When playing cards' games, if high enough and with the distraction of the players, one can spot others' cards when layed on top of the table :-)

Take care,
