Since 1992, curator Pearl Lam's Contrasts Gallery has been gathering a group of designers eager to push the limits of the design world. Lam chose to name her concept 'Contrasts' because her philosophy is to celebrate and exaggerate differences. The aim is to explore the relationships between art, architecture and design by fusing individual creative talents without prejudice.

In particular, her own design firm XYZ Design creates easily approachable pieces that are distinguished from other contemporary design firms via an incredible attention to detail coupled with the use of distinctive features and materials. A strong Chinese influence is evident in many of their works. One only needs to take a look at their Corset Shade with Pylon Stand Table Light lamp, which impresses with its lavish use of jade, bronze, feathers and lace.

Alternatively, check out the Fake chair, a Louis XV chair-Chinese chair combo upholstered with deconstucted replica handbags and accessories purchased from China (a thing the Chinese are gaining notoriety for).

On the other hand, the other designers did not forget to have fun. The whimsical Spoon chair in fiberglass and wood (by Zhang Qingfang) is quirky, unforgettable and almost unimaginable. Rena Dumas's Case-TĂȘte Chinois reinterprets the traditions of Chinese design and looks to be a very versatile table in use. And is Mattia Bonetti's Embroidery Pop sofa meant to be a tribute to Chinese pop culture or what?

For more of the other interesting works, be sure to pop over to Contrasts Gallery.
