A HOUSE TO KEEP OUT AN INDIAN CITY

Indian businessman Parag Shah's real love is design. And that passion shows in every corner of the house he commissioned Matharoo Associates to build for himself and his family. Located in the city of Surat in India, Shah hopes to pay homage to his favorite architect, Japan's Tadao Ando and his trademark features - the creative use of light, smooth concrete and blending nature into design.

The house's center feature is its open courtyard, covered in red sandstone. Inside, one "can be outside in the air without anyone else looking in." Shah had wanted the house to be a criticism of India's urban centres because he found them too gaudy and ill thought-out. He specifically wanted a home that keeps the city out.
