HOME REJUVENATED!

We recently completed the design and construction works for a 2 bedroom apartment at West Coast Road. The clients - a young married couple - gave an open brief for the project but suggested a contemporary living space for two.

In designing a compact space like this, creating a feeling of space and refinement is of utmost importance. Drawing inspiration from the female owner's love for florals, we took our cues from elements found in a garden and infused the space with a subtle sense of tamed wilderness - floral prints, stones, raw wood, greenery etc.

Creating an illusion of space involves more than simply opening up an apartment's interior. Simply dividing a space into different 'pockets' can sometimes give the illusion that it is roomier. Instead of knocking down walls, we proposed to reconfigure the living room entrance by putting up a partition (a laminated fabric-glass panel which conjures up the image of a traditional wrought iron garden fence) because the original 'open' configuration meant one would walk right into the living room upon entry. The newly carved-out section becomes an inviting foyer and shoe storage area.

On the opposite side at the dining area, tall mirrors, highlighted by recessed lighting at the sides, double the sense of space.

The same garden theme continues in the master bedroom and the study room. We opted for a simple palette of materials, which is repeated throughout the apartment, creating a continuity that adds to the sophistication. In the bedroom, the aim is to create a glamorous, up-market retreat that was cozy and welcoming – a 'Garden of Eden' the couple could relax in.

The deep purple that envelopes the study room - an unconventional color to be found in rooms used for that purpose - and punctuated by doses of intense red found in the customized furniture captures the lovely hues of Echinacea.
