THAT'S MY DESIGN STYLE, EH?

A client asked me over dinner this evening what my design style is and - gosh - that really made me think hard on the spot!

In retrospective, I guess that wasn't too tough a question to answer. After these years in the industry, I have a far better sense of the direction I want to take my designs towards - provided clients agree to take the journey with me. While my design approach veers towards the so-called contemporary style (yes, I do love to appear all hip, sleek and chic), I also enjoy mixing traces of other design styles in my work. To me, there aren’t any definitive rules and regulations in design at all.

Simplicity is also key: I always try to reduce and eliminate whatever I feel is excessive in a space to a point when the result will turn out a bore. My theory is this: If there are too many things to look at, you simply do not see any of them. Your mind just reads 'messy'.

And messy is not a nice term to be associated with.

My design methodology usually revolves around a clean, neutral space complemented by the effective use of colors. The color palette can be anything, ranging from black and gray to really bold, bright colors. It's important to me to create the right balance between all of the design elements and have a feel good factor that is evident in not one, but many ways.

IT'S 'EASY' TO BE A DESIGNER

I was having lunch with an interior designer friend the day before when she told me how offended she was by a prospective client lately. Apparently she was presenting her proposed design to this middle-aged couple and was asked by the wife halfway through the meeting, "You mean the design of this cabinet is that simple? Seems like something I can design myself too". My friend, ever the demure girl she is, was dumbfounded for a moment but nevertheless replied politely that it was not necessary to go for a complicated design in that particular area based on her general concept.

Frankly, I myself have been through this kind of 'grilling' too, and never fail to walk away feeling disappointed at how little respect local designers get from some people. As an example, you would never point at Picasso's Dove Of Peace and say you can easily draw the same thing too. Some people just don't appreciate the thought (and sweat) process that the designer went through prior to being shown the 3D renderings - which, according to them, "can be easily churned out".

Sigh.

YTL RESIDENCE BY JOUIN MANKU

Paris-based Jouin Manku designed this sprawling residence of a 'power family' in Malaysia. Completed late last year, this house is the "ultimate expression of the taste, influence and industrial-scale capabilities of the prominent family whose entrepreneurial activities have shaped Kuala Lumpur’s skyline".

The house offers no clear definition of the interior and the exterior. This is made possible in part by the integration of a clear glass facade. The architecture itself is a marvelous melting-pot of both traditional and contemporary design elements.

And how can I miss out mentioning that kitchen work top? It's a god-send!
