THE CONCRETE THINGS CHAIRS BY KOMPLOT

Concrete is a timeless, versatile material that offers remarkable possibilities. Applied to furniture design, the result is equally stunning. The Concrete Things Chairs, designed by Danish partnership Komplot and manufactured by Swedish company Nola, explores those wonderful qualities of the popular construction material in the production of seating.

HOW TO BE CREATIVE

I sometimes get asked, "How do you get your creativity flowing?". Hugh MacLeod might have a better answer to that question.

Happy weekend.

SLIDE AT 100% DESIGN

Come September, SLIDE, the Italian firm which produces furniture and luminous objects in polyethylene, will present at 100% Design, one of the most important exhibition dedicated to international interior design.

SLIDE will be proposing innovative projects born in collaboration with Karim Rashid, who came up with three proposals that revisit the traditional shape of the chair with his characteristic style. Blos, the sinuous armchair, is a new version of the classic rocking chair; the ergonomic stool Koncord has futuristic and slim lines and Rap, the enveloping two-place sofa, is the unconventional answer to a stylish sitting room.

Pure is the fun little teddy bear inspired by the first all-Italian manufactured toy designed by LAB 81, in line with the internationally confirmed toy movement design principles. Created from polyethylene with the rotational mould technique, Pure is available in the latest trends of white, yellow, sky blue and pink. Pure reviews virtual world characters to provide the perfect accessory for fans of cartoons and video-games.

A fun alternative to light up your home and give that cool touch of exuberance to domestic environments.

Fizzz is a flexible and innovative modular furniture accessory shaped like a beer bottle top, based on an original idea by designer Gianni Arnaudo.

Lazy Bones is eclectic English architect Barnaby Gunning’s contribution to SLIDE, the latest in a long series of design collaborations that continues to enrich the latter's collection, this time with an original, essential design chair. It is built from polyethylene with the rotational mould system, making it a light, easy-to-handle product that is perfect for furnishing and simple positioning both in and outdoors.

PAINTING A CONCRETE FLOOR

Do you realize the power of paint? A fresh coat of paint never fails to make anything look better.

Last weekend, a friend rented a new office and asked me for advice on how to improve the flooring inexpensively. Almost instantly I told him - PAINT! Yes, the existing floor is concrete, so paint proves to be the perfect - and cheapest - solution for it.

I know not many people in Singapore has concrete floors in their homes, but if you happen to be one of those few, you can follow these nice instructions and give your floor a facelift (but I warn you, this is not a one-weekend project!).

ORIGAMI INSPIRED

Most people think of Origami simply as the art of paper folding. But the reality is this unique Japanese art can be - and has been - interpreted in various aspects of design. From furniture to interiors to architecture, it seems that there are no categories in which Origami has not been applied. Here then is a look at the many facets of Origami-inspired design.

Swedish designer Cecilia Lundgren saw the advantages to creating furniture in a single piece. The Vika table is formed by a folded rectangle with one cut in each corner.

This Fold lampshade strikes me as something that is just phenomenal. It is the first object in a growing collection by Rachel Young which investigates what Origami techniques can offer, and the challenges it poses when applied to functional objects.

"Inspired by origami forms, the Folded chair combines beauty, ergonomics and functionality, giving a soft leather feeling to the touch. It also brings simplicity into the fold by being created out of a single stainless steel."

And let's not forget about the equally gorgeous Origami chair from Form Us With Love.

Here's an artistic little apartment in Barcelona which pays tribute to the art of Japanese Origami - to some stunning results. While 'twisting and turning' the walls and ceilings in different angles, the designer also decided to expose some parts of the raw concrete ceiling for added visual interest.

What a design challenge! Brilliantly marrying Japan’s traditional art with minimalist architecture, this house designed by architect Yasuhiro Yamashita of Atelier Takuto truly captures the essence of geometry.

KITCHEN TREE BY BALIN LEE

There are many skills I hope to pick up and cooking is one of them. But I never succeeded in learning how to cook because the preparations bore me to death. You see, my brain automatically shifts into neutral gear whenever I think of all the chopping, slicing, marinating and what have you. Basically, I just like the munching part more, ha.

Hey wait. Or maybe not. Perhaps a 'fun' kitchen like the Kitchen Tree designed by Balin Lee (for the recent Electrolux Design Lab Competition) can bring out that culinary talent in me.

Hmmm, I'm hoping it will...

TOY CAR WALL ART

When I was young, toy cars were my one of my indulgences. Mask. Tamiya. Hotwheels. You name it. I have it all.

No wonder I felt so very inspired when Kus showed me this unusual art arrangement formed by lining toy cars one against the other on a blank wall. The idea is simple and it sure makes for a whimsical yet dramatic statement. If this joker can relive his life again, you bet this would be on my bedroom wall.

KULMS CHAIR BY MISO SOUP DESIGN

There's very few chairs I can use the terms 'sexy' and 'curvy' on. The Kulms chair by Miso Soup Design happens to be one of those. This beautifully crafted stacking chair comes as one solid sheet of bent bamboo plywood, with a center slit cut to form a pivot support.

FUN INTERIORS FOR KIDS

We've been kids before and we all know if our parents want to keep us within the house, they had better inject a bit of excitement in the house. But sadly, most homes are boring. Extremely boring in fact, compared to the stunning examples we see here.

The little ones staying in these homes are lucky indeed...

Ever fancy a tree house when you were young? Complete with climbing ropes, ladders, swings and various hidden storage spaces, this bedroom brings all of the elements of an outdoor play space inside and makes the room feel like a self-sufficient home at the same time. Even the kid in me is dying to jump into this space right away.

Oto Design put an indoor playground - complete with a sea of colored plastic balls - right in the middle of this apartment to entertain children.

Paris firm h2o architectes created this elevated child’s bed that also forms a partition and play area in a Paris residence.

EAMES CHAIR WITH A TWIST

It's definitely a good way to end Tuesday discovering this Eames DCW chair with a twist. British design studio ilovedust has redecorated the design classic with a pattern that is based on a dialogue conducted between Ray and Charles Eames during the unveiling of the chair on the Arlene Francis ‘Home’ show broadcast in 1956. Each chair has a unique pattern pertaining to one of the designers and tells a 'his' and 'hers' story with different quotes from each designer.

RIBBON BY HEMAL PATEL

The image of a ribbon blowing in the wind is enough to set London designer Hemal Patel's creative mind working. Here, he has designed a coat rack in the form of a flowy ribbon hand-made in mild steel and powder-coated in five different colours. It works as a practical, everyday storage solution when in use, and a beautiful sculptural wall art when free of coats.

ALL THE THINGS I KEEP INSIDE BY NYNKE BOELEN

Unless you're a bear hibernating for the winter, there's really no excuse for hoarding things. But the fact is many people tend to collect things that they think will be useful one day. So the house becomes filled with stuff which probably may never see the light of the day again. Sigh.

Now help comes to these people in the form of this All The Things I Keep Inside cupboard. Nynke Boelens's idea of the perfect storage is a flexible cupboard that can grow in proportion of the things you put inside. The 'furniture' is made of 480 parts which are all inter-connected with an elastic cord, making it possible to adjust its size depending on the quantity of things you place inside.

APARTMENT IN BUCHAREST BY AA STUDIO

The owners of this apartment in Bucharest should be enjoying the 400 square meters of space in their new home tremendously. Well, actually anybody would, considering how small most apartments are these days.

Two mirroring units were combined to create this spacious environment, with one apartment holding the day spaces and the other catered for night activities. AA Architects did not forget to take advantage of the park which is outside the apartment and provided unobstructed views from within the apartment by installing plenty of windows. Color-changing lights set the stage for a dramatic night indoors.

I don't know about you, but I'm having a pretty good feeling for this home. Nice job there!

ROOM RESCUE

Living/ dining areas - before

Living/ Dining areas- after

The owners of this resale 3-room HDB flat wanted a total revamp of the living, dining and kitchen areas. The desired look is a compact, functional space with clean-cut lines and a contemporary vibe. The young couple also loves to invite people over for small gatherings and prefers the place to look and feel spacious.

Typical of older HDB flats, the existing space is elongated and narrow. Hence, it is proposed that all internal walls separating the living, dining and kitchen areas be removed to achieve an open, airy feel. On one side lies the entertainment unit which houses the TV and hi-fi equipments. Glossy, reflective laminates and colored glass used here create visual interest and give a very modern edge to the entire home.

The unit joins up to a servery counter which serves as a dining table and demarcates the kitchen and living area. This new layout allows the owners to keep the conversation going even when they are in the kitchen.

FLAKE AND FLOWER BY MIA CULLIN

I totally dig these unconventional curtains or room dividers, which are created by joining little TYVEK-made pieces - in the shape of snow flake or flower - together. The result is a soft white veil that sections off spaces beautifully.

THE LATEST BUZZ

We haven't been doing renovation works for HDB flats for a really long time. So we felt like we struck lottery when our workers ripped off the false ceiling of a 20 years old flat (at the open balcony area) which we are currently working on and bees start buzzing past them! Above there lurks a giant bee hive! Both KUS and I have never experienced anything like this before and are glad to have a trusty contractor who knows how to handle the situation. By the next day, the nest was removed by a pest specialist.

Now, bees are known to be hard workers. The workaholic in me like to think that behind this discovery lies a far much profound message: "Stanley Tham and Kusnin Tan, you guys are not working hard enough. SLOG!" Ha!

TALKING ART AND INSPIRATION

When I'm stuck for ideas, I like exposing myself to works by other creatives. That's why you'll catch me at some galleries, exhibitions and fairs ever so often.

Art reigns as the most inspiring medium for me, and looking at paintings never fails to awaken my creative thinking process. And it does not have to be a case of connecting to an artist's emotions every time I come face to face with an art piece. Sometimes I seek to refresh my mind - and finding meaning -by admiring the contrasting strokes and colors found in a painting.

A week ago, a talented artist friend of mine, Hann shared with me some of his works (finally!). And I have to say I loved them! The way he plays with colors and their contrast in his 'animamix' works has always fascinated me and makes me ponder how I could possibly interpret something similar in my own work. I especially applaud him for his unique rendition of pop culture icons from movies and video games. Way cool...

Do you like these works? What kind of art inspires you? Drop us a note.
