A CONVERSATION ON SMALL APARTMENT DESIGN

That day I overheard a friend's friend mentioning how tiny his new apartment is. "It's only 600 square feet, so there's no need to do anything to it... An interior designer? Forget it..."

Actually it comes as a strange statement to me, because I thought the small size is precisely the reason why a professional is needed. His is a family of four, with a maid and tonnes of stuff to move over from his present 4-room HDB flat. I can already imagine much havoc going on in the process of finding a home for everything when he move in. An interior designer can definitely help bring some sanity to the whole thing, as well as make better use of every inch of the available space. Especially if you are holding a day job which requires you to jet off to another country ever so often, isn't it the best option to leave that task to people like us?

Ha, that does sound like some kind of advertisement for KNQ Associates...

A BLUE CONVERT?

I have never been a fan of blue walls until I came across the interiors of Germain, a Parisian restaurant in a newly revitalized space at 25-27 rue de Buci in the 6th Arrondissement. Suddenly, I'm a convert.

CLIPPING

So how do you make the most of a small space and still make room for all of your belongings (and your baby)? The answer is a 'love bed' as the architect describes it.

The interior doesn't come with any colors (unless if you consider black a color). It's minimalist. It can even be described as sparse-looking. But there's something about this home by Tamizo Architects that attracts me. Maybe it's the serenity of it all...

I'm in love with those back-lit acrylic panels featuring abstract tree forms seen in the duplex Wow suites at the Lexington W.

DESIGN DRIVEN

Holdger Schubert's 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi Boxer lives side by side with a modular couch, 2 Dodo recliners and a slick flat LCD TV in a harmonious minimalist space that packs in a stunning view. Little wonder it won the Maserati and Architectural Digest's Design Driven contest for best garage.

STAIRS AS STORAGE

Nobody would ever complain about having too much storage space. We interior designers are constantly looking for nooks and niches to carve out that extra storage space in the home. The staircase then becomes one of our dear friends: the space under a staircase can be great for storage without appearing conspicuous. In the case of this renovation project in San Candido, Italy, Holger Kehne and Eva Castro of London's Plasma Studio got their way and incorporated pull-out drawers into individual risers to very slick results. WALL MURALS BY CHARLOTTE MANN

I'm amazed. By London artist Charlotte Mann's wall murals, that is...

THE ROOM BY ODA

Most of us wouldn't want to have roomful of matchy-matchy furniture. But take a good look at this modular dwelling system called The Room by Office for Design & Architecture (ODA). Intended to be retrofitted into existing spaces, The Room consists of three elements, namely the Pod, the Media Station and the Satellite, which cater to the basic functions required by an individual.

The use of simple materials meant the cost of the system can be kept low. As well, the appearance and arrangement can be easily configured to fit within rooms of all sizes and for users of all ages.

HOUSE IN JIGOZEN BY SUPPOSE DESIGN

Suppose Design completed this house featuring windows shaped like pitch-roofed houses on the coast of Hiroshima, Japan. As the area is threatened by floods and typhoons, living areas at the core of the house are embraced by a large communal envelope, giving the occupants a buffer zone that cushions the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The buffer – for use as sun lounge, veranda, terrace or garden – forms a safe yet dynamic shell that both unites and separates interior and exterior.
