HOME REJUVENATED!

The homeowners' love for The Renaissance cultural movement formed the starting point for the design of this high-rise apartment.

This European note begins at the entrance, where we wanted to create a sense of adventure and anticipation. An angelic sculpture greets the guests from atop a museum-style stand which has been integrated into the design of a shoe cabinet and partition. Imagery of ancient columns and architecture on a glass screen draws one into the spaces immediately.

Living area - after

The living room was designed to be a formal reception room, boosting a somewhat neutral color palette – gold, beige, black and white. Stones – a classical material – feature on the floor and furniture, working in tandem with ornate wall beading and frames to create a sense of drama.

The dining corner is dominated by window pockets which feature stained glass-like figuratives, a la windows found in cathedrals.

A long corridor which leads to the bedrooms is decorated with stone tiles and provides a gallery-like space to display the owners' small collection of prints (and a TV that provides viewing pleasure from the attached common bathroom!)

It was decided early on in the design process that each room should have a distinct personality of its own. The music cum guest room retained a traditional look to provide a visual connection to the living room, but with a warmer, bolder color palette of gold, white, black, red and purple. Concealed storage reduces clutter and provides a tidy environment to create music in.

Walk-in closet - before

A spare bedroom was connected to the master bedroom by sealing off the original entrance from the corridor and a new doorway created within the master bedroom. Inside, a black color scheme reigns, allowing the gold accents as well as the owners' prized possession of umbrellas to stand out and shine when the lights are turned on.

Master bedroom - before

There is a degree of monumentality in the master bedroom, which fits the theme perfectly. Continuing the design direction in other parts of the house, the room is adorned with gold trimmings and exquisite fabrics.

NOMINATE FOR 10 MOST INFLUENTIAL DESIGN BLOGGERS 2010

It's here again. Yes, we are talking about 'Home Rejuvenation's 10 most influential design bloggers' poll (view past winners here)!

Here at Home Rejuvenation, we are always interested to find out which design weblogs are influencing the media and readers the most, partly because we love surfing the internet for fresh design inspiration in the course of our work. Although the term 'influential' is really vague, we wish to gather and share a list of the more popular design blogs (based on the opinions of all you folks out there) and have lots of fun during the process.

This year, we are doing things a little differently. We are inviting you to nominate your choices before we filter down to a top 20 list, after which voting starts to determine the 10 most influential bloggers/ blogs. So if you have a favorite design blogger or blog, this is the best time to show your support. Send us your nomination (please limit the nominees to 5 blogs only) and tell us why you like it.

Once again, we are extremely pleased to collaborate with the design world's premiere magazine Wallpaper* to award 3 picked voters with a one-year subscription to the magazine each.

Nomination closes on 30th June.

BOOKSHELVES YOU'VE NEVER SEEN... TILL NOW

Reading a book is easy. Storing them is another story on its own. With these following examples, I am beginning to refute the conventional notion of what makes a good bookshelf. You will too...

The occasional 'form over function' doesn't hurt. While you are pondering how to reach those books at the top, we are surely enjoying the sight of this wonderful stairway to heaven. Link

"The concept behind this piece is one of negative spaces - the books negative representations are made permanent in the structure of the unit. The Name of the "Book Porcupine" is given in preference to its silhouette, the stout legs against the spines of the books sticking out at various angles and degrees." Link

I'm not sure if I should put my focus on the books or the bookshelf itself with this one. What say you? Link

I love this one the most - a personal library what is not so personal after all. This is one unique literary exhibition, featuring a seat at one end and books held in place on a slanting surface by means of a strap. Link

Designer Max Schulkens designed these cutesy hanging book holders to contain your favorite collection of books. Not my ideal choice of a book storage but... Link

JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER'S APARTMENT IN PARIS

Walk through the mind (or lines) of Jean-Paul Gaultier with this kooky apartment designed in the famed French fashion designer's signature style. Situated in front of the Eiffel tower, with stunning views of Paris, this home features a stark black and white color scheme and fabrics stretched over furniture. Crazy but fun! Link

CREATING YOUR OWN PRIVATE SPACE

If you lead a stressful and hectic lifestyle, you might want to consider creating a private retreat in your home - a private space within which you can unwind, read or just 'seek refuge' from the busy world outside.

Without making major modifications to your home, you’ll still be able to find a spot that is yours alone. The space don't have to be large. It can be that attached window bay or an empty corner of your bedroom. Dress it up with objects you personally feel for, be it travel memorabilia, musical instruments or books. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to escape into your own world.

NEST CHAIR BY NINA BRUUN

Nature often provides the best design inspiration. Take for example this unique Nest chair by Copenhagen based designer Nina Bruun. Taking ques from a bird's home, Bruun created a little nest of a chair by hurling birch strips in different thicknesses around the supporting base structure. The result is a stunning piece of furniture which can fit in as comfortably in a modern and contemporary home as it can in a rustic one.

TRY THE LEAN WAY

Walls aren't the only places where you can display artwork. Try placing the pictures on the floor or lean them against the wall or furniture. Experiment with placing two art pieces of different sizes, one leaning over the other, partially covering the other one but still leaving most of the art visible. It's a pretty cool idea to showcase your collection.

VAULT BY LAURENS MANDERS

Beautiful memories remain with Vault, an unusual safe designed by Laurens Manders. The piece looks much like a strange lumpy creature on three legs, and comes with five drawers for one to store memories, "most of it is about family, friendship and love". Don't be misled by its bulk though - the unit can only store precious letters and photos.

CASA SKY BOX BY MAPT ARCHITECTS

I'm not sure how you look at this, but I would think it's all done in the name of good clean fun.

Inside the Casa Sky Box, a VIP area at an entertainment venue at Denmark's Horsens Station, irregularity is celebrated. The designers MAPT Architects maintained that the sculptural furniture do serve a function: the ‘mountain’ is a wall that the children can climb but at the same time a cave, where they can play computer games.

Hmmm...

SPAZIALE SERIES BY LANZAVECCHIA + WAI

Francesca Lanzavecchia and Hunn Wai created these sculptural interior products that seem to swallow, embrace and wrap possessions. The Spaziale Series of furniture is made of Danish maple tree and covered in changeable stretch fabric, which adapts depending on contents and usage. It is designed flat-packed and easy to assemble,, and changing the colors of this furniture is exactly like putting on different clothes - the colored wraps can be replaced or customized to your taste.

AND I THOUGHT IT'S WALLPAPER

The sky really is the limit when it comes to mural painting ideas. But if you ask me, what truly matter are artistic skills and a whole lot of patience, as portrayed in this very fine example. Link
