SINK INTO THE COMFORT OF CONVERSATION PITS

How many of you remember the conversation pits, once made so popular in the 70s? This seating concept probably has its origins from many years before that, and really caught on with the hippie movement ever since its inception. Whether the design approach of the pit is psychedelic, modernist or Middle Eastern, the result is always the same - that of a seating arrangement sunken into the floor, creating a cozy area for chit-chatting with friends or family.

Nowadays, it may appear that such an idea has disappeared from the interior design world. In Singapore and many parts of Asia, it's no big surprise given the ever shrinking floor area of our homes. Creating a sub-floor will also add a hefty bill to a renovation. Hence, creating a raised seating appears to be a more sensible choice for many.

Nevertheless, a sunken conversation pit has its place in modern interior design. We look at a few fine examples that caught our eyes.
