When your children have all grown up into teenagers and moving out proves to be a heart wrenching experience, a complete rejuvenation of your home is about the best solution out. The design approach to this Moor Street house is simple - maximise the interior functions and available space whilst responding to the context by creating a single building out of three small objects rather than a single contemporary monolith.
The ageing lean-to which contains the kitchen, bathroom, dining and laundry were removed. These functions were relocated and updated along with the addition of a master bedroom. The original brick terrace was retained, cleaned up and given a new lease of life.
In the middle of the original house holds a small light well containing a beautiful Japanese maple tree and this was retained and integrated into the living spaces during the revamp - conversations can now be made from many corners through the maple. This also brings about an outdoor feel inside the house, giving the illusion of life in a tree house.
